Bundu Tuhan Retreat Centre

At the foothill of Mt. Kinabalu lies a small village called Bundu Tuhan. This special and beautiful name “Bundu Tuhan” came from the local Dusun language means “Valley of God”. Situated at 1,200 meters above sea level, Buhan Tuhan is a valley surrounded by temperate farm lands on the lower part, while the upper part consists of lush green forest running on rolling hills. Cool air and peaceful atmosphere are the main characteristics of Budun Tuhan, which also has a very good view of Mt. Kinabalu, especially in the morning, unless the valley is covered by thick fog which is not unusual at this place. The villagers at Bundu Tuhan are mostly from the Dusun tribe, and most of them work as farmers. History recorded that the British had an outpost with a clinic in Bundu Tuhan as early as 1929. Today this small village consists of a few wooden shop houses, a primary school, a clinic, and of course the very popular Bundu Tuhan Retreat Centre.Bundu Tuhan Retreat Centre (BTRC) is one of the largest retreat centres in Sabah, and its surrounding areas which are covered by greens and forests, top up with cool air, and peaceful environment make it an almost perfect place for retreats and seminars. And also the distance fromKota Kinabaluto Budun Tuhan is only 85km. The day time temperature is around 25 degrees Celsius and the night time temperature can drop to 18 degrees Celsius. The BTRC is made up of two main buildings in the shape of the letter L. The wooden building which was built in 1970s consists of 3 storeys, while the concrete building consists of 4 storeys was built in the 1990s. The rooms are basic. Facilities include a conference hall with a mini P.A. system, meeting rooms and Kitchenettes. The Retreat Centre can accommodate a maximum capacity of 230 persons and there are as many as 6 types of rooms available. Please note: Priority for reservation will be given for Catholic Retreat purposes and Diocesan events.

ABOUT BUNDU TUHAN RANAU VILLAGE

One of the best things about driving up to Kinabalu Park is the view along the way. Remote villages give a splash of colour to the green of the valleys and the white of the clouds. Travellers passing by must often wonder what life must be like to live in a village like that. From a distance, it looks as though there are no roads leading into the villages, and the only way to get in or out is to walk.
A woman with a wakid basket on her back walking up the steep road.
That may be so a few decades ago, but development has come even to places like this, and with Kinabalu Park being a major tourist draw, the roads have improved tremendously. Villages close to the main road have benefited the most, and there are paved roads leading into these villages.
One of these villages closest to the Kinabalu Park Headquarters is called Bundu Tuhan. Located in a valley to the right of the park, the turning to Bundu Tuhan is just before the next corner to Kinabalu Park. The junction is easily recognizable. There is now a hotel(?) on top of the hill at the junction, and there are some stalls selling vegetbles by the roadside. It isn’t so much the condition of the road, but the steep slopes that will pose a problem for cars with a small cc. If you wait by the roadside, there are mini vans that ferry passengers to the the villages down below.

The word Tuhan means God in Malay, but Bundu Tuhan is not derived from Malay. Instead, it is taken from the language of the Dusun people who live on the mountain slopes. Bundu is the name of a kind of fruit tree, while Tuhan means landslide or felled. A story tells of how a landslide occured and the Bundu tree was felled in the process. Looking at the slopes of the mountain, it is easy to imagine landslips happening often around here.
God however does play an important part in the life of the people here. Although previously pagan people, a huge majority have become devout Christians. If you were to come on Christmas Day, you would see young girls and boys dressed in their finest as they make their way to church. There are a few villages located in this huge valley here, and Bundu Tuhan is probably a collective name for the whole place. Each individual village has its own name. There is an orphanage in Bundu Tuhan, and a Christian retreat.

Traditionally, farmers who practised shifting cultivation, many of the people now work in Kinabalu Park as well, either as park rangers, mountain guides or porters. Considering its proximity to the park, this is not surprising. In fact, according to the book Globetrotter’s Visitor’s Guide to Kinabalu Park by Anthea Phillipps, the first registered park guide was from this village. This man, Gunting bin Lagadan was reputed to possess remarkable powers and had the ability to protect the people who climbed with him from evil spirits.
An interesting, if macabre, attraction is the skull hut. If anyone has every doubted the headhunting exploits of the Bornean people, they can see for themselves, the real human skulls displayed in a wooden box by the roadside.

MORNING INSPIRATION

Welcome every morning with a smile. Look on the new day as another special gift from your Creator, another golden opportunity to complete what you were unable to finish yesterday. Be a self-starter. Let your first hour set the theme of success and positive action that is certain to echo through your entire day. Today will never happen again. Don't waste it with a false start or no start at all. You were not born to fail.
Whether one is twenty, forty, sixty, or eighty; whether one has succeeded, failed or just muddled along - life begins each morning! The greatest fact in life is that it is never too late to start again. Biography simply overflows with inspiring examples of this truth. However discouraging your days may have been, keep this thought burning brightly in your mind: life begins each morning!
God changes appearances every second. Blessed is the man who can recognize him in all his disguises. One moment he is a glass of fresh water, the next, your son bouncing on your knees or an enchanting woman, or perhaps merely a morning walk.

A baby is God's opinion that the world should go on.

A baby will make love stronger, days shorter, nights longer, bankroll smaller, home happier, clothes shabbier, the past forgotten, and the future worth living for.

If my heart can become pure and simple like that of a child,
I think there probably can be no greater happiness than this.

I love to think that the day you're born,
you're given the world as a birthday present.
